Umpire, Don’t Play

July 29th, 2010 . by Cary

I’m thinking that the American Public (you know, the “WE” part of We The People) are getting sick and tired of judges who block laws that have been voted on by We The People. Judges are like umpires – they are not the ones who are playing, they are the ones who are supposed to be making sure the players are following the rules.

Middle Of The Week

July 28th, 2010 . by Cary

… or, Waiting For The Storm. Which title plays better?

I’m thinking I should have gone with the storm. We are waiting for the rains here in the Phoenix area (Flagstaff area got hit hard last week, and they are still cleaning up. flash floods are pretty rough!) and we are also waiting for tomorrow, July 29. That marks sixty days after the legislative session ended, and a boatload of bills takes affect. The two big ones are SB1070 and the Concealed Carry bill.

SB1070 gets plenty of play every where, let’s not dwell on that one.

Concealed Carry – now, there’s a polite society waiting to happen. This bill makes it legal for any legally owned firearm to be carried concealed within the state of Arizona without a CCW license. So – that little old lady you just helped across the street? Yeah – she’s got your back in a firefight. Soccer Moms and carpool pilots alike can pack the heat – and nobody can tell who’s carrying what. Talk about speaking softly! I predict a whole lot less road rage, more consideration for the other guy, and I am certainly going to increase my personal “don’t tick off the women” ratio. Think about it – concealed weapon, a certain uptick in hormones, and one wrong word – I shudder.

Yep, gonna be a lot more civil in the Grand Canyon State now.

No wonder liberals hate us.

Getting arrested by not following the law is not the way to get your point across about being “law abiding members of society” – just saying.

Shocking Development

July 21st, 2010 . by Cary

I am shocked. Shocked, I tell you. Who would have thought that a rubber, inflatable dam in the middle of the desert would eventually fail? Catastrophically?

When the dam was installed over ten years ago, I remember thinking to myself “What kind of idiot would use a rubber tube in the desert to hold back water?” Then I remembered it was a government project. Common sense ain’t so common, is it?

The river filled as far as the eye could see within seconds, witnesses reported.

Warning sirens started wailing within minutes, and officers rushed along the riverbed to try to warn anyone of the approaching flood.

When seconds count, official response is only minutes away!

Best Laid Plans

July 19th, 2010 . by Cary

Well, I thought I could get the doors installed yesterday. As it turns out, scheduling conflicts appeared and with the home owners being away from their home until it was time for us to go see our babysitter’s brand new bouncing baby boy ( 9 lbs, 14 ounces and 21 1/2″ long) the screen doors are still sitting in my garage.

And will be until the home owners get back from their trip, sometime in August.

That means I can pretty much count on starting the next project while trying to keep the doors from getting damamged in any way. We’ll see how that works out.

Really?

July 16th, 2010 . by Cary

Really?

I had to bring the doors back to the shop; two of the door frames on this historic bungalow are nowhere near straight, true and plumb. OK, maybe plumb, but not straight or true. So, trim here, reshape there, done. The small pair is going on a new door frame, so it is STP, but there is less reveal so I had to set the hinges in further than I had them; since they were routed in to match the 1/2″ thickness of the door jamb, I had to route them a bit more. I’ll be going back Sunday afternoon to install them.

That’s not what I’m saying “Really?” about.

It’s this:

One hundred and nineteen. Degrees. Fahrenheit. On the cool side of the house…

Dental, Brakes, and Screen Door Friday

July 16th, 2010 . by Cary

Well, the last time I chatted with ya’ll about brakes I was pretty sure I was going to have to replace mine on the SUV after having replaced the ones on TMBWitW’s Camry.

You are looking at what was almost a complete weld-up of the right front inner pad to the rotor. Wednesday morning I replaced the right front pads; that was a comedy of errors in itself. First, I couldn’t find my big sockets. Fine, I’ll use my big wrenches instead. All the standard wrenches weren’t quite fitting right. The closest I came was with the 7/8 – the 13/16 was just a tad small, and the 7/8 was actually too large. I didn’t have a 27/32, or I would have been fine. I tried using an adjustable knuckle buster, but you can imagine how THAT turned out. So, I carefully measured the bolt I was attacking and went to Checker to purchase a 21 mm box/open end wrench. When I got back, it turns out I had measured wrong. It was a 22 mm bolt. Back to Checker, buy the right wrench, and finally, about an hour and a half after starting on this twenty minute job, I got the caliper off the rotor, only to find the item pictured above. The back side of the rotor looks like the surface of the moon. I had to get to work, so I put the new pads on, buttoned up the right front, and promised the left front I would get to it soon.

“Soon” turned out to be this morning. At least there was nothing bad with the left front. Only took me about twenty minutes to do the deed. Next week I’ll be doing the back brakes, and I have to squeeze in the time to get the right front rotor turned before I completely ruin the new pads.

Even as I take a minute to write this, I’ve just gotten back from the dentist (one stubborn cavity needed to be redone) and I am making preparations to go to a friends house and install the screen doors that I built. I’ll take pictures and post them later, I promise.

If I don’t talk with you before then, have a safe weekend and stay hydrated. I’m staring 117 in the face with some high humidity – it’s usually raining by this time of the year, but the weather has been weird lately. California stole our rain last night.

Patience

July 13th, 2010 . by Cary

Lord, I need some. Well, more than I have. For example, I could use the level of patience that one lady demonstrated today …

Mommy and two boys come into the store. Older boy, about six, pretty well behaved, quietly looks around and asks permission before touching or playing with anything. Younger boy, about three, goes straight into Taz mode. Mommy is constantly taking Younger by the hand, guiding him towards age appropriate toy section, while still managing to shop for the birthday present.

In conversation while ringing up the transaction, Mommy says that Younger managed to slip out the doggy door into the back yard, pull the hose into the living room through said doggy door, and then turn on the water and spray the entire contents of the living room in the time it took Mommy to put down the grocery sacks and turn around to see where Younger was. Lord, I want the kind of patience that allowed Younger to still be breathing after that.

Because you see, after this long, I figure the rest of the world’s occupants should be operating by the rules that most of us already follow. My patience for people who figure they don’t need to follow the rules is running really, really, thin.

Are ya listening, NAACP? I have no patience for those who act in a racially inspired manner calling others “racist” – are ya listening, Mr. “dismiss the charges even though there is solid video evidence against the black panthers” Holder?

OK, gotta go to bed. I’m so mad and tired right now I can’t even put the thoughts together that had coalesced earlier into a well-written post. You should have read it then, it was awesome.

Inevitable

July 11th, 2010 . by Cary

Of course – I knew mine were making a little noise first thing in the morning, and then behaving the rest of the day. Now that I’ve fixed hers, mine are all jealous and are starting to really whine for attention. Maybe if I stay up late tonight, after finishing a little wood working that I should have had finished a week ago…
