That said, the pastor in Gainesville who has stated that he plans on burning copies of the koran on 9/11 is one of two things: either crazy, or crafty. There is a fine line there.

He’s crazy if he thinks it is going to change how the muslims view themselves. He’s crafty if he’s got everyone giving this so much attention and drawing attention to the reactions of the followers of islam, the so-called “religion of peace” that is demonstrating, rioting, and generally showing their collective “hinders” to the world. He’s crazy if he thinks all this media attention wasn’t going to happen. He’s crafty if he thought a little media attention would help the first crafty notion mentioned. He’s crazy if he lets all the pressure change his course. He’s crafty if his course was to just announce, but never carry out, the burning.

You see, that’s what I think is going to happen. Instead of lighting up all those copies of the koran, he’s going to pull a press conference and point out how just the thought of their “holy book” being disrespected was enough to send the muslims into paroxysms of rage and rioting, and point out how when a Bible is burned, it doesn’t bother Christians. He’ll probably point out the hypocrisy of the media left, who celebrate the first amendment every time someone burns a flag but decries the burning of the koran…

That’s what I think will happen. We’ll see.

It’s been a week of anniversaries, and we’re not finished yet. Monday August 30 was two years since Logan went to the Rainbow Bridge, today marks eighteen years since Dad passed away, Monday September 6 will mark four years since TMBWitW’s mother passed away. The end of the month will mark two years since LeaAnn passed away.

Today would also have marked Mom and Dad’s 60th wedding anniversary. This will be the first one with both of them gone.

Cancer is an equal opportunity slayer. While Dad did not die of cancer, but as a by-product (a clot blocked a vein), pink ribbons and donations just never seem to add up to enough soon enough.

Right now, today, I will remember Dad. Monday I will remember Grace. LeaAnn will be remembered when her anniversary comes.

Not that they will ever be forgotten.

The live band was pretty good, too, if I do say so myself!

This morning I did some half-hearted scraping of the floor in the closet. It’s going to be slow going, working about a half hour at a time, especially this part – I have to spray water on a small area, let it soak, then scrape the area (due to the dried paint and drywall compound that the original builders just built right over). Then, after it dries, either sweep or scrape it again to get the dried gunk off the floor.

I did manage to get the baseboards cut away – when painters come in to paint, they sometimes use a bead of caulk along the top edge of the baseboard to smooth the transition to the baseboard and hide the irregularities of the wallboard. There was a lot of caulk holding these baseboards on. Tomorrow is a lumber cutting day and Wanda’s memorial service, Saturday I will be at Babystop bright and early, Sunday is fellowship and related activities followed by another round of eBay stuff, so the next time I”ll be working on the closet looks like Monday morning.

Anyone know of a way to squeeze more hours into the day? I need to get more accomplished while my eyes are open.

You can, however, see how careful the builders were in floor prep – removing all the paint and what not before applying the carpet pad glue. That will entail some scraping with the Big Nasty before I lay any flooring. The next step was to remove the carpet strip itself, along with the nails that had been used while the concrete was still green enough to accept them without spalling the slab. Of course, now that it’s fully cured (ten years later) when the nails are pulled out some of them pulled up nice chunks with them, and I will have to use leveling compound in those spots.

Tomorrow morning before the world awakes I will be taking out the old baseboard, and probably starting on scraping the floor.

Another sign is incontinence.

The closet in our master bedroom is (was) one of the last two “rooms” in the house that still had the original carpeting that was installed when the house was built. The other is the office/train room/storage area, but that’s not going to last – I’ve already had to cut out sections, and now it’s a case of unloading the room and removing the carpet. Last Friday, someone relieved themselves in the closet, and Saturday TMBWitW spent a lot of time removing everything form the closet so it could A) air out and 2) have the carpet removed. I tore up the small area on Sunday morning. Next step (now that you can actually go in there without holding your breath) is to clean the floor real well, removing the carpet tack strips, and then buying the new flooring.

We’re thinking engineered wood, like in the bedrooms. I’ll get some pictures and keep you updated.

Yesterday, when I asked the group if there were any birthdays or anniversaries this week, two were mentioned – one of the young ladies is about to become a teenager, and a son mentioned his mom’s “27th” birthday. I looked right at her – keep in mind, this is a woman I have known for a while now, we have spent time together in fellowship every weekend and some weeknights, and I can’t believe I did this – and could not remember her name. For the life of me, I blanked. My usual memory tricks failed me. I simply could not remember her name.

It wouldn’t have been so bad, really, except that before I could dredge up the name from the morass of my mind, we were singing “Happy Birthday” and it got to the part where we mentioned the names – and I didn’t have it.

Talk about an awkward silence…

Coverage was applied in the form of a joke about an old man (?!) who was attending memory classes at a school, and when asked the name of the school, he used one of the memory tricks – “Oh, what’s the name of that flower, it’s usually red, real pretty, and you give it to your true love?” “The rose?” “Yeah, that’s it – hey, Rose! What’s the name of that school I’m going to?”

Yeah, the joke made me feel real better. I just sank further into the seat (right behind her!) and hoped I could melt into the floor. She turned and said she forgave me, but I could tell I had hurt her deeply. I couldn’t apologize enough.

I’m not even fifty yet – is this the path I’m going to take? Names of friends and loved ones fading away, or playing hide-and-seek when I need them the most?
