Two Fer Tuesday

March 29th, 2011 . by Cary

First – and most important – tomorrow, March 30, is Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. Find one. Welcome him or her home. Mean it. In 1973, on this date, was the official withdrawal of all troops from Vietnam. The welcome they got then was tainted by the very vocal protesters who jeered, booed, spat upon and denigrated these heroes. These men and women placed their lives on the line, and that was the welcome they got. (i had a cousin who, until the day he died, stayed holed up in his room because of the ‘welcome’ he got.) Tomorrow, by and Act of Congress, it is officially Wlecome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.

Find one. Or two. Thank them.

Profusely.

And mean it. They deserve that much.

Second – from the mailbag, put as much thought into this as you wish. It was attributed anonymously to an anonymous source in the Czech Republic.

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.”

In this case, I think that we have gotten the government we deserve. Let’s raise our standards a bit next time around, shall we?

11NOV2010

November 11th, 2010 . by Cary

In Honor of all the veterans who have made this day possible to still be celebrated – thank you.

In your travels today, make sure you thank at least one veteran in person. It’s the least we, as citizens of this Great Nation, can do.

June 6, 1944 – D Day

Nothing to add here – except a big THANK YOU to the veterans of D Day, to whom we owe a debt too large to repay with mere words.

Veteran’s Day 2009

November 10th, 2009 . by Cary

As this magical hour approaches – magical, for me, since it is the split second shared by both the Marine Corps’ Birthday and Veteran’s Day – I cannot help but stop to think how blessed I am to have had the opportunity to serve my country. A lot of people in the current administration make it seem like it isn’t MY country any more, and in fact they want YOU to feel like YOU don’t own it, either – that you should, in fact, be sharing it with the rest of the poor, undeveloped world because it just isn’t FAIR that there are haves and have nots in this world.

I’ve got news for those who feel it isn’t FAIR – “fair” is a county thing, maybe a state thing, where you show off your livestock and your produce, the product of your own hands and sweat equity and your skills. You know, all those things the intellectuals of the world would have you believe are beneath contempt. If it wasn’t for the ones willing to get down in the trenches, both literal and figurative, the intellectuals would be crying for someone to save them. It is those who are willing, who were willing, and who will be willing in the future to lay there lives on the line for this experiment we call The United States of America that allow the intellectuals the freedom to whine about how unfair it is that we, the United States, have the largest base of manufacturing in the world. Well, we did, until the intellectuals determined that they could make all the icky manual labor jobs go away if the corporations who provided those jobs were forced to pay more for the privelege of operating within our borders.

Sorry – got off track for a bit.

I tend to do that when I think of how many family members, through the years, and tribe members and fellow sheep dogs have forfeited their lives so that We The People could have the life we have, and know that if the intellectuals had their way we would be chasing down the mighty Tofusaurus on the wide open plains for tonight’s supper – since intellectually, farming hurts the earth, and cows hurt the earth, and cars hurt the earth, and breathing hurts the earth…

Sorry, sidetracked again.

To all those who have served and are currently serving: THANK YOU. To the members, the fewer and fewer members, of the Greatest Generation: THANK YOU.

Where Does The Time Go?

July 16th, 2009 . by Cary

Sometimes, life gets in the way of trying to keep a blog up-to-date. Take this week, for example. I’ve spent most of it trying to get this new computer updated with the stuff I can’t live without from the old computer. I haven’t even started working on the stuff that TMBWitW needs on the new computer.

Yes, a new computer. No, we couldn’t afford it – but we also couldn’t afford to be without a computer at all, as most of you are in the same boat – your lives are inextricably intertwined with, through, and around either email, electronic checking and bill paying, or some other aspect of the computer in your daily lives. Originally I was just going to replace the hard drive in the old ‘puter and use the existing drive (reformatted) as extra storage. Fry’s Electronics had a one terrabyte hard drive on sale for $90 – isn’t technology amazing? – but then I started looking at the price of an operating system to make the new hard drive go. You see, the old hard drive was transplanted from the original computer, and it still had Windoze XP (home) on it. With the need to replace the hard drive (I have removed and replaced everything BUT the OS, and it still wouldn’t let me get on the internet in anything but safe mode) came the need to have a new copy of an operating system.

Don’t you love when the manufacturer gets to preload what they want to sell with the computer and not have to supply the original disks?

So – in the end, it was cheaper to buy a new laptop with Windoze “Vista” on it than to buy a hard drive and the OS separately. I know – I’m in the process of downloading Linux and getting it ready to run sideways on this computer. Then, maybe I can avoid this problem in the future. Maybe.

TMBWitW also took some time off this week – paid, this time – and suggested that I drive cab for most of the days she was off, to help make up the deficit from when she had to take a “furcation” – furlough, with out pay – last month. So, I drove yesterday, a twenty four hour shift. When I got home, there was a surprise from my wife waiting for me (remember, this is a “G” rated blog!):

Taking Chance

Her note touched me. I cried. Can’t wait until I have enough time to sit down and watch the movie.

Got in bed this morning at 0515, got up at 0800 because the bug service was going to be here “promptly at 0830” – which, of course, means they didn’t show up until 1030 and then only after I had called and asked where they were.

Then, I managed to finish a project that needed installed for some time. finally, got BACK in bed about 1300, and slept until 1800. I’ll be going back to bed shortly, and getting up early tomorrow morning so I can do the cab thing again, this time for two days running. If I don’t see you for a couple of days, you’ll understand, right?
