Hard to Tell the Left from the “Right”

June 18th, 2013 . by Cary

“The people can never willfully betray their own interests: But they may possibly be betrayed by the representatives of the people; and the danger will be evidently greater where the whole legislative trust is lodged in the hands of one body of men, than where the concurrence of separate and dissimilar bodies is required in every public act.”

–James Madison, Federalist No. 63, 1788

Founder’s Quote Daily

There’s a problem with the last line – “dissimilar bodies” – all three branches are now in collusion with one another, and they all share the same goal – the destruction of the United States from within.

Slow Saturday

June 15th, 2013 . by Cary

My new Saturday routine – get up early enough to pick up dog poop before I go to the Men’s Group to sing and play … this afternoon, I picked up my new glasses today. I had ordered new frames and lenses, and also a pair of sunglasses. My eyes are bad enough to require progressive tri- or quad-focals. The sunglasses only have the distance vision in them, so it’s kind of a safety thing, too – I can’t read the phone without my regular glasses, and the sun is usually bright enough that I ain’t driving around without the sunglasses.

How’s that for an exciting post? Now, don’t let all this excitement get to your head and make you run off and do something crazy …

Just Say NO to Obamacare

June 13th, 2013 . by Cary

Remember back when Pelosi (ptui) said they had to pass the Affordable Health Care bill (Obamacare) to know what was in it? Well, it seems Obama’s (THHO) signature legislation has finally been figured out. Now that they know what’s in it, they don’t want any part of it. Funny, but conservative bloggers have been telling them from the get-go that what was in there would create higher cost coverage than what we had then.

My blogging friend BZ has a nice little blurb up:

The fear: Government-subsidized premiums will disappear at the end of the year under a provision in the health care law that nudges aides and lawmakers onto the government health care exchanges, which could make their benefits exorbitantly expensive.

Yeah, now that they’ve saddled US with this crap, they’re high-tailing it out the back door …

“Daddy’s Crying!”

June 12th, 2013 . by Cary

Last night, MEG wanted to play school. This involves me sitting in one of her (small) chairs, and filling out worksheets that she has made up previously. Occasionally, there is a craft that she demonstrates and I get to work on.

Last night’s craft was a hand-made “kite” folded out of a sheet of regular paper. The instructions were to tape a piece of ribbon for the tail, and then to color the kite and to make it a Father’s Day kite.

Dad passed away on September 3, 1992. It was the morning of my parent’s 43rd wedding anniversary. I was living in California at the time, with my first wife and her two daughters. I got the call at work (this was pre-cell, remember?), my first wife breaking the news to me in a straight-forward way. “[Sister] just called, your Dad passed away this morning.” A blood clot had broken free in his leg and traveled up to his heart.

So-called “bereavement” rates on airlines meant that the airlines would jack the prices higher than the planes could fly. You see, you book at the last minute, so you have to pay a premium price plus all kinds of fees. Living on the Central Coast of California at the time (north of SLO, in Atascadero) meant the closest airport of any size was two hours away in Santa Barbara. Instead, I drove. Jumped in my Mazda 626 (sure wish I still had that car) and drove like a bat outta hell. Passing through Kingman, I hit a construction patch that tore a hole in one of my tires. I put on the temporary spare and limped up to the truckstops east of Kingman. I pulled into a tire place and got a new tire, and headed on to Flagstaff. I spent a short night at Lea Ann’s house, then in the morning headed down to Tucson. [Younger Brother] didn’t want to go in and see Dad; the rest of us there went up and had a viewing. Dad looked like he had fallen asleep in front of the football game. No, that’s wrong. Dad looked like he was studying the strategy of the football teams on TV.

We saw him there, in a hospital bed, because there was to be no burial or cremation – he had donated his body to the UA medical department for cancer research.

After the priest held a private service in the living room of Mom and Dad’s home, in Tucson Estates, I went home.

All of these memories came rushing over me as my beautiful daughter watched me making the Father’s Day kite. She went out to her Mommy and said “Daddy’s crying!” She was worried that she had done something wrong, or that I didn’t love her anymore because I was crying. We spent the next while explaining to her that sometimes, tears were happy tears. I tried to put into words just how much my Dad would have loved her.

Mister Mister

June 10th, 2013 . by Cary

With the weather warming up a bit here in the Valley of the Sun, Pastor figured it was time to do something about the courtyard at the church property. There are two out buildings that run north-south on the property, the Sanctuary runs east-west at the north end of the courtyard, and in between there is a grassy area where we have built a play structure and placed some picnic tables. When it first started getting warm, we rigged up a couple of shade tarps over the tables. Shade by itself, if you’ve spent any time in Phoenix in the summer you will know, just doesn’t cut it.

Saturday morning we placed a misting system along the east walk. Sunday morning, everyone could tell it was working, because the walk up the courtyard was MUCH better than it had been. Maybe not all that much cooler, but the light mist evaporating off your skin sure makes you feel cooler.

It worked so well, that Sunday evening we extended the first run with a T fitting to run across the courtyard and placed a couple more legs on the other side. With the shade tarps, the misting system made sitting outside down right comfortable. We also added a misting system to the play structure, so the kids would not pass out from heat exhaustion while swinging and climbing.

As for me, my weekend was pretty full – pick up the dog poop, sing and play with the men’s group, work on the misting system, spend time at the house with Wife and Child; Sunday morning up and to service, hit Chase Field and watch the Diamondbacks lose to the Giants, back to the church to put up the rest of the misting system while Wife took Child to a classmate’s birthday party, play School with the Child (who, by the way, ignores the fact that she is on Summer Vacation and wants to do school all the time – we must have done something right) and then collapse into bed.

How was your weekend?
