First September Friday

Got a busy day planned (as I write this the evening before, and plan to have it published at 0601 Friday morning) starting with Cinnamon going to the vet – one of the fosters (who are both leaving this weekend) bit her ear. Dang it. Poor Cinnamon – she was the one that got attacked by Princess, another foster, several years ago – and she is so gentle and loving that she doesn’t fight back.

This early morning appointment (0845) necessitates moving the chiropractor to a little later in the day – but not much later, because I have a dentist appointment (teeth cleaning time! with a full upper plate, it takes half the time of everyone else!) at 1130 followed by Cinnamon’s diabetes checkup visit at 1445. Due to the timing of her insulin shot, the visits can’t be combined. Because their was blood involved, it can’t wait much later in the day to be taken care of.

Whew! And I’m just getting warmed up!

Then I need to finalize the trimming of the doors and one shelf, along with finding a set of hinges for a corner cabinet, for the Scottsdale RR Club cabinets. I was going to end up skinning them with laminate, but I really don’t have the tools needed to skin existing cabinets. I can build laminate cabinets from the git go, but skinning them after they are hanging on the walls is another matter entirely, and one I do not wish to undertake this late in my wood career.

With the Toy Store Manager career coming right along, I think it’s time to hang up the wood tools. I’ll hang on to a few items that I need for work around the house, but things like the industrial strength/sized table saw is going to find a new home. If you are interested, please call BR-549.

New (and probably overdue) addition to the blog roll (I really should rename that “Daily” part …) – a12IggyMom needs your attention. She’s conservative, and kinda direct most of the time (snicker – duck). Give her a look see.

I sure hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing Labor Day Weekend. Don’t get too rowdy, stay safe, stay sane. I’ll see about getting back in touch on Tuesday or thereabouts.

One Thousand

April 6th, 2011 . by Cary

1,000.

Finally, after nearly six years in the blogosphere, I have finally made it to the milestone.

Along the way, I’ve made a lot of friends. I’ve met a lot of other bloggers, some I’ve kept up with, others who have fallen by the way side, still others who have passed on while still active (Old Ranter, Basti), and a precious few that I have actually had the pleasure to meet (Douglas Gibbs, Gawfer, Greybeard). There is a host of them in Southern California that I look forward to possibly meeting up with in June, after the ASTRA convention (Robert, Gawfer some more, Doug some more, maybe Jenn, maybe even John and his sister, and Paul).

I even made a run for president. Don’t you wish I was there instead of the bozo we have now?

I became a New Daddy.

My blog has been used as evidence by the City of Phoenix in an attempt to trample on the First Amendment rights of a private citizen.

Many other bloggers out there have published many more entries than I, heck, some of them *cough*Texas Fred*cough* do that in a matter of months.

I don’t write about politics as much anymore, my weight has popped back up to the 220 range since I quite the paper route, and I have landed in a job that I believe will carry me though my golden years.

I still enjoy working with wood, and get to do just that on occasion.

But, perhaps best of all, I still get to share my world with you, my loyal reader(s).

My Day “Off”

Slept in – until 0700 – I should have been up at 0630, for Cinnamon’s insulin shot with her food. Puttered around so far, filling time before 0930 haircut. And boy, do I need a haircut. I’m starting to look like a long-haired hippie freak. After that, I’ve got five cabinets to assemble and finish – all wall cabinets, but one is a corner cabinet. Neat trick, corner cabinets – if one thing is not perfectly square, then the whole cabinet looks wrong. And that includes the wall itself. I’ve got some adjustment designed into it, but the cabinets are frameless, which takes away a lot of the give and take.

For those of you within the panic zone that is the Misnforming Silly Media, here’s a link to some information that you should find comforting: A Nuclear Primer. Caution – he was a sailor, so his language is a little – uhm, saltier – than what I allow on this site. (tip of the hat to Larry for the link to the Primer.)

Round Up

February 3rd, 2011 . by Cary

No, not a good old-fashioned one where I run down the list of brilliant bloggers and share the latest sterling tidbits they have posted, but one of a more personal nature.

First, I apologize for not posting pics of the new store fixture. If you want to see it, you are welcome to swing by the store any time we are open – we’re in the Agua Caliente Center, 69th St. and Shea Blvd. M-F 10-7, Saturday 10-6, closed Sundays.*

Second, a word about Cinnamon:

Diabetes mellitus is frequently diagnosed in dogs five years of age and older. This is also known as Type II or adult-onset diabetes. There is a congenital form that occurs in puppies called Type I or juvenile diabetes, but this is rare in dogs.
Diabetes mellitus is a disease of the pancreas. This is a small but vital organ that is located near the stomach. It has two significant populations of cells. One group of cells produces the enzymes necessary for proper digestion. The other group, called beta-cells, produses the hormone insulin. Simply put, diabetes mellitus is a failure of the pancreas to regulate blood sugar.

Cinnamon has been fat and happy since we were called by TMBWitW’s niece, BoBanney. BoBanney found Cinnamon, thin as a rail and hungry, sitting on a street corner with no tags or collar near the Taco Bell where she was working about eight years ago. She called us, and being the kind-hearted animal lovers that we are, we came down and picked her up – and she hasn’t been lacking for love since then. About a week and a half ago, TMBWitW started coming home to a puddle on the floor every day – very unusual, since our furkids are very well house trained and haven’t piddled inside since they were puppies. After the experience of losing Sara, we (meaning, of course, TMBWitW) have become hyper-aware of changes in our now-geriatric dogs. We figured out it was Cinnamon since she was the one wanting to go out at night now, instead of being able to hold it until morning. A few tests at Acoma and the diagnosis was in – diabetes mellitus. After a week of insulin and a more regulated diet, Cinnamon has not had any accidents in the house for the last several days, and she is actually looking a little thinner. Dr. McConaughey told TMBWitW that the fact that we didn’t have a doggie door probably allowed us to catch this very early in the onset, which means a much better prognosis for treatment. Most cases they see the diabetes is so advanced that there is nothing they can do, because the dog had access to the yard throughout the day and the owners didn’t catch other, more subtle indicators. (Cinnamon had been drinking close to one and half or two gallons of water per day, by herself, which is one of those subtle indicators. with multiple dogs, unless you watch, you can’t really tell who’s drinking what. on the days we are at home, we were noticing that Cinnamon was hitting the water bowl pretty often.) Cinnamon is even getting a little frisky – she’s trying to dance for her treats again, and she is sassing us when we ignore her hints for treats.

Third – tomorrow, being a Friday, I’ve got a honeydew about a mile long. I don’t think that woodworking is anywhere on that list, however. I do have another work-related project, but it’s at the store, and kinda boring, so I won’t tell you about it. OK, if you insist – I’m rebuilding the “floor” above one of the stock closets so that a person could actually stand up there and move stock around instead of trying to reach four feet to the wall from the top of a step ladder. See? I told you it would be boring.

Gotta go – almost time to leave.

Red Friday

A comment I made a couple days ago indicated that there were many posts that never got published. That would be because they come to me while I am driving and … well, you know how dangerously idiotic it is to try to post by phone while you’re driving. Not that everyone around me isn’t being dangerously idiotic while driving in Phoenix, but I figure ONE of us should be paying attention to the road.

Yes, that’s one of the many subjects that would be posted about regularly.

My earworm right now is “Last Night I Heard The Wolves” as performed by the BareNaked Ladies on one of the kids’ cds we have playing in the store.

I tried to find a youtube of the song, or even the group – but “bare naked” seems to scare the filters.

OK – I’m off. I’ve gotta get working on at least one of the many projects that have stacked up.
