Blue Moon Round Up

December 31st, 2009 . by Cary

I know, it has been a while, hasn’t it? To refresh your memories, I will be publishing and updating as I go along, so come back and check for when it’s finished. All of these bloggers are ones that I read daily at least weekly as often as I can; they are all worth your time to at least go visit and read the one item I have highlighted. Let’s get started, shall we?

Before I get started on the round up, however, I want to give a shout-out to the mayor of Hurst, Texas, one Richard Ward, who still has not answeredf the questions I asked of him way back here. And he thought I would forget about him…

Subject: MAIG, again!

As I was going over this year’s posts, I ran across our correspondence. Made me think of all the good times we had discussing Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

I know, you “signed off” to me, but I am kinda curious – just what has MAIG done since you joined it, besides stating the obvious (that mayors are against illegal guns)? I mean, I would hope that mayors are against ALL things illegal. Have you joined Mayors Against Illegal Prostitutes? Mayors Against Illegal Drivers? Mayors Against Illegal Immigrants? Mayors Against Illegal Left Turns?

No, you haven’t – because none of those things matter to a two-bit mayor who’s only hope of elevating his profile is to hitch on to some gun-grabbing group trying to cloak itself in pompous activity.

I am still waiting to hear from you regarding the basic premise of MAIG. Why does it need to exist, other than as a cover for some lefty gun grabbing bunch?

Basic question, please answer it. Unless you already realize that you won’t be serving another term and have decided to write me off completely.

Happy New Year!

OK, om to the round up, this time I promise!

First up is a Navy veteran, new to my blogroll, and a first FOR my blogroll – a site that is not a blog so much as it is a store. Larry Van Schuyver runs Sitting Pretty USA. He sells t-shirts, and a “portion of each sale will be donated to the VA Hospital volunteers who assist and care for our veterans daily.” Check him out, and if you are so inclined, help him out.

Alaska Steve is back from his vacation in the Lower 48, and he is promising more photos. So far, his series covers his and Goldfish’s travels through up to Boston. Can’t wait to see the rest!

GuyK has come down with a case of cellulitis in his left arm, so he wishes us a Happy New Year with the thought that his blogging will be kinda light on Charming, Just Charming.

This concludes the last Round Up of 2009 – and possibly forever. This has taken me over four hours to do, and while trying to do this AND watch my now three year old MEG, I am reminded why I don’t do these anymore. Here’s to a Happy and Healthy New Year to all of my readers, and I hope to see you in the chat room or on the phone Friday night at 2200 hours (MST) for The “O” Word.

Vacation Week(s)

December 17th, 2009 . by Cary

This week and next, TMBWitW is on “vacation” – that is, she isn’t scheduled to be in the office, but since her team is already a skeleton crew, she has no choice but to do some work from home becasue she doesn’t want to walk into a huge pile when she returns on the 28th, just in time for year end. The silver lining is that we get to spend a lot of time in the house together along with MEG. MEG, by the way, is potty-training. FOr the most part, she is potty trained – but still doesn’t fully grasp the whole “poop in the potty, not in your panties” thing. We’re working on it.

My job has been spotty lately, with the end of the year and it being a “dedicated” deli, most of the newspaper folk are taking lots of time off between now and the end of the year, so there’s really no need for a third person right now. So, I have off until after the first of the year. (insert twiddling of thumbs here)

This Friday night, at 2200 MST, The “O” Word will be on the air. Just right for following the Friday Follies on Pastor Ed and Annie B.

This Sunday evening, TMBWitW, MEG and I will be joining our good and wonderful friends to tour the Luminaria at the Desert Botanical Gardens. This has become an annual tradition, and we look forward to it every year. The Gardens are lit up with thousands of Luminaria, and there are several musical guests scattered throughout the gardens. Last year, there was an installation of glass sculptures by Chihuly.

Thursday? Where Did the Week Go?

December 3rd, 2009 . by Cary

Saturday was spent trying to avoid getting my own set of sick germs. Sunday was church. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday was spent working and trying not to be sick. Now, I’m getting the show ready and getting ready to go to bed.

Sometimes, I miss not being able to do the Thursday Round Up. When I did those, I was guaranteed to visit all my blog friends at least once a week.

Talks are in progress to move The “O” Word to a Friday evening slot – perhaps 2130 hours or so. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Quick Update

October 15th, 2009 . by Cary

So – my “day off” was anything but. Got to working on the Hope Chest project and forgot my chiropractor appointment. Dr. P is very accomodating, however, and I managed to fit in during a lull in his schedule. Spent most of yesterday re-doing the weave on the front of the chest – the difference between the old and the new is mostly just how the wood looks; I think I managed to copy the style pretty well:

Old Weave

New Weave

I’ve also matched the facing angles of the front piece, and need to piece that together before I can start assembling the front. Then, the only thing left is coloring the lighter pieces of walnut and the final coats. I’ll be meeting with the owner on the next few days to go over that decision…

DOn’t forget to tune in Friday morning at 0700 Mountain Standard Time for The O Word -I’m going to touch on the latest Healthcare garbage and the proliferation of RINOs in Congress. Don’t miss it!

My Dreams Were Better

October 1st, 2009 . by Cary

I am a carnivore.

That is, I like to eat meat. Beef, preferably. I’ll settle for a pork chop or a rack of pork ribs if need be, but I prefer beef. Steak. Roast. Even beef ribs. Rare. Bloody rare. When the waitress asks how I want my steak, I tell her I want it so a good paramedic can have it up and mooing inside of three minutes.

So – today at the deli, one of the tasks was to slice up a couple of rare beef roasts for roast beef sandwiches. The slicer (a mean, fast, horribly powerful model that gobbles up five pound blocks of cheese or ten pound turkey breasts and spits out perfectly sliced results every time. the blade is twelve inches across and sharp enough to take off a finger tip before you feel it) has a habit of throwing small chunks that didn’t quite slice correctly back at the operator. I’ve worn face masks of provolone, muenster, swiss, turkey, even ham. Today was going to be a first, and I was, in a sick and weird sort of way, looking forward to it.

That is, right up until it started happening. I forgot to factor in the B-grade horror movie aspect of the result. There was just something about having red meat chunks flinging at you that can be a mite unsettling, especially with congealed fat and chunks of still-cold blood mixed in. After slicing ten pounds of beef, Chef came back to pick up the pan. He took one look at me and said “Nice meat mask.”

It was not what I had thought it would be like.

Quick reminder – BlogTalkRadio, Friday Morning, 0700 Mountain Standard Time. The “O” Word – and this time, I’ll have the microphone plugged into the right jack!
