A Lot Less Interesting

March 16th, 2011 . by Cary

Bushings replaced, one bearing redone, and the steering on the Road Rhino is no longer as questionable as Obama’s birthplace.

Rabbit trail time … as I was writing the title of this post, I remembered an English teacher in ninth grade, at Greenhills High School, had us keep writing journals. I have no idea where mine ended up. I do remember that on the first page, on the first line, we had to make this entry:

a______________________________________________________lot

to help us remember that they are, in fact, two separate and distinct words. I cannot, for the life of me, remember the name of that teacher. She was a very good teacher, and it was my loss when the family moved from Greenhills to Palestine, Ohio, at least it appeared to be a loss at first. I had a couple of good Enlgish teachers at Tri-Village, the one I can remember is Greg Senf, who was also the drama coach. (surprise! i was in some plays in high school!) I also distinctly remember the art teacher, Dave Brown, and the science teacher, Lowell Storer. The summer after my junior year, I earned some money by painting houses with Dave Brown, and last I knew Lowell Storer was involved in a plane wreck and stopped teaching. Shame, really – he had an interesting style, and one that I was comfortable with. The summer after I graduated, I moved to Arizona. Greg Senf hitched a ride as far as Boulder, Colorado. I haven’t heard of him since. Interesting trip – I was driving my older brother’s F150, which he had left at the farm, loaded up with all kinds of stuff from the house. My two younger brothers went with me, and we ended up staying at LeaAnn and Mel’s house in Mountainaire. Dave drove down from Monterey (where he was stationed, and where I ended up for a while also) with some of his Army buddies to pick up the truck. Mom and Dad moved out, and took over the renting of the house that LeaAnn and Mel were in when Mel built a duplex just off NAU’s campus and moved into half of it. My brothers and I helped Mel that summer in his contracting business, and then on September 24th, 1980, I shipped out to boot camp in San Diego.

OK – enough remembering. It’s bedtime for this bonzo.

So – A Week Later

March 10th, 2011 . by Cary

My, how time flies when you’re having fun.

The store move has been going well. Most of the heavy moving was accomplished the Sunday afternoon after the Bag Sale (speaking of which, manners! my goodness, that’s your kid you are modeling that behavior to!) with the help of a couple of young men from the area high school. (No, the whole store is not moving location, just fixtures within the store are being rearranged for a fresh look.) (hey, that’s two parenthetic asides in one paragraph – anyone know the record?)

Tuesday afternoon, the carpets were cleaned. Now, it’s just a case of rearranging stock and making room for the arrivals from the Toy Fair orders. Since I am closing in on the one year anniversary, I should start seeing the cycle start to repeat itself.

As an aside, I made a complete check of my files and whatnot (kind of a useless endeavor, after Bushwack already combed through the databases) and it appears that The O Word is none the worse for wear after the DDoS attack last week (h/t to Texas Fred).

Acid Reflux Friday

So, here it is 0315 in the morning and my acid reflux gagged me awake. Now, with the burning in the back of the throat, I can’t seem to fall back asleep.

Lest you think this is an untreated situation, I am on a good AR medicine; however, the pizza last night for dinner was probably not a good idea.

I think I may have to adjust a certain round staple off my dietary list.

Life without pizza. Bummer.

Missed It By That Much

February 24th, 2011 . by Cary

WordPress version 3.1, that is – it’s new yesterday, so I’ve upgraded today. Any takers on when the incremental update will come out? I’m thinking Monday, the 28th.

Trusty Steed is back at work. I picked it up Tuesday evening, and it runs really well now. It has, however, developed a bit of a wander in the steering, and that’s the next item to look at. By “bit of a wander” I mean I look like a drunk driving down the road. It’s really – uhm, interesting – at highway speeds. Tomorrow morning we’ll be taking a close look at it.

Tomorrow afternoon, TMBWitW has promised I could take advantage of a coupon special – as many holes as I can golf after 1430 hours for $19.00. I’m kinda rusty, so this may be more fun than intended!

Dodging Bullets

February 20th, 2011 . by Cary

The Trusty Steed is not dead, it will rise again to continue it’s mission. My mechanic is sure a hose replacement (to keep hot water from escaping and spraying electrical things, like spark plugs and a tune up will restore the vim and vigor to the QX4.

The 1998 QX4 has a 3.3 liter offset V-6 motor. The passenger side plugs are easily accessible. The driver’s side plugs are located along the top of the motor, intertwined in the intake manifold, except the rearmost plug, which is located on the back of the block. Right next to the second heater bypass hose. The one that’s been leaking.

To replace the hose (or the spark plug) the intake manifold must be removed and replaced, a job that would cost thousands in a dealership. My mechanic is a blessing to me, especially now that I don’t have time to do this kind of work myself, which is why I hadn’t started in on the project before it became an issue.

In the meantime, I am driving what can only be considered a pinnacle of manliness (top row, second from right).
