Most Frustrating of All …

May 17th, 2011 . by Cary

… I have once again fallen off the soda wagon. It’s been happening for a while, and now I am admitting it – I am back on the Coke. Cherry Coke, Vanilla Coke, straight Coke … you name it, I’m drinking it.

Except Diet Coke. The sweetener they use (aspartame – blech!) leaves a nasty little aftertaste in my mouth.

And, don’t believe the Coke ads about Coke Zero tasting just like regular Coke – it doesn’t. It actually tastes like an unholy blend of Diet Coke and [shudder] New Coke. Good grief, do you remember that taste? It’s been pretty much seered into my memory from when they were saying that the New Coke would be replacing the Classic Coke.

Yeah, that didn’t work out too well.

In other news – the US has hit it’s debt ceiling. There have been comparisons (for those of us too dumb to know what they mean (like a certain 52% of the voting public)) to your credit card spending limits. Now, the administration is worried about not having enough money to finish bankrupting the country.

Here’s an idea – quit spending money you don’t have, you new-coke-personified-as-a-president.

Whew!

April 5th, 2011 . by Cary

Man, I’m glad that’s out of my system!

I owe an apology to Gawfer for cutting our chat short last night on Facebook – but, when the system says run, you better.

Boss Lady has a cool project in the works – as many of you are painfully aware, Borders is shutting many stores. The one nearby Kidstop is one of them, and they are at the point where their fixtures are on sale. Boss Lady and her business partner wrangled a deal for a string of bookcases and a library ladder for the Education Room – so yours truly will be taking out and repurposing the existing shelving on two walls, and then installing the Borders units. It’s gonne look real nice – be sure to come in and see it when it’s finished!

What – you thought I would stay home yesterday with so much to do? Nope – made it to court, made it to work, then got sent home when I kept turning green and having to sit down. Nice nap yesterday afternoon, though.

Two Fer Tuesday

March 29th, 2011 . by Cary

First – and most important – tomorrow, March 30, is Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. Find one. Welcome him or her home. Mean it. In 1973, on this date, was the official withdrawal of all troops from Vietnam. The welcome they got then was tainted by the very vocal protesters who jeered, booed, spat upon and denigrated these heroes. These men and women placed their lives on the line, and that was the welcome they got. (i had a cousin who, until the day he died, stayed holed up in his room because of the ‘welcome’ he got.) Tomorrow, by and Act of Congress, it is officially Wlecome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.

Find one. Or two. Thank them.

Profusely.

And mean it. They deserve that much.

Second – from the mailbag, put as much thought into this as you wish. It was attributed anonymously to an anonymous source in the Czech Republic.

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.”

In this case, I think that we have gotten the government we deserve. Let’s raise our standards a bit next time around, shall we?

Change of Course

February 8th, 2011 . by Cary

I logged on to just post a quick hit on the fact that once in a while, the well is empty and nothing comes up worthy of the bandwidth – which, in itself, really isn’t worthy of the bandwidth.

Then I noticed that the nag is at the top of the screen again – WordPress 3.0.5 is available.

Since my last update went from 2.something or other to 3.0.4, I think I’ll wait until at least two more iterations are released – based on past performance, that should be next Thursday or Friday.

Incomprehensible

January 25th, 2011 . by Cary

This is puzzling to me, on several fronts. First, let me assure you I am aware the accused is considered innocent until proven guilty. However: There is footage of Laughingboy pulling the gun and pulling the trigger. He hasn’t manned up, that I know of, and taken responsibility for his actions (ie, confessed) but there are enough eye witnesses to the events of January 8, 2011 in front of the Tucson Safeway that there is no doubt about who did what.

Yes, the headline says Laughingboy pleads, and in the article it clarifies that the judge entered the plea for Laughingboy at his lawyer’s request, but what do you expect from an industry that doesn’t always get it right the first time?

And, if you don’t mind my asking, what kind of a self-respecting lawyer would take on this case as Laughingboy’s defendant? Oh, wait – never mind. Anyone who has built her career by defending Ted Kaczynski, Susan Smith, and Eric Rudolph is probably looking at this as another feather in her resume…

Yes, I am being harsh. Yes, I am aware that she is the best defense attorney for the accused if they don’t want the harshest sentence. Yes, I know I am being hardheaded about this. Lord, forgive my attitude, help me to understand these things.

please note: the link may or may not work, i’ve had trouble with links from azcentral.com. i also know of some self-respecting attorneys, so forget the “no lawyer is self respecting” jokes – we’ll have a special forum for lawyer jokes later. some of my best lawyer jokes have come from lawyers. this whole scenario would be moot if just one person had exercised their second amendment right, and we would be hailing a hero instead of mourning so many victims. remember, it is up to you to provide for your own defense – the police are really good at securing a scene so evidence can be collected, but they cannot be everywhere to protect everyone at all times.
