Whew!

April 25th, 2010 . by Cary

OK – so since I posted on Friday, there have been some changes around here. Quick note, first, to those with the “ru” and “pl” domains – you will never be registered as a user, and your spam comments don’t get past WP Spam, so give it up already.

Saturday morning, with the power booster in the hands of a trusted and capable friend, I headed off to play a gig at the feeding of the homeless at Crossroads United Methodist Church, put on by Prodigal’s Home. Doc Mike had the lead, Mike Beem backed him up, Brenda tickled the ivories, and I just tried to keep up with the bass. Then, since the new power booster was scheduled to be in, instead of going to the usual music fellowship, I went home to wait for the part to come in so I could a)get the road rhino back on it’s feet and 2) give TMBWitW her car back so she could run out and buy a birthday present for the birthday party later in the afternoon. While waiting for the part to show up, I went ahead and shingled the porch roof on MEG’s new doll house.

Once the power booster was here, Harry helped me get it installed and we bled the system. By this time, I had to grab a shower and get changed for my second interview. (I would like to apologize at this point for NOT keeping everyone updated as to the number of first interviews, possibilities, applications, and searching I’ve been doing – dwelling on the time involved for all the dead ends tends to make one depressed considering the lack of returns) Road rhino buttoned up, a big hug for Harry, and we departed – he was headed to his house, and I was headed for Scottsdale. Our route was pretty much the same for the first while or so, which was a good thing. About 15th Ave and Bethany Home the brakes decided not to release anymore. I forced the rhino onto a side street, and Harry pulled in behind me. No tools, headed for an interview, what to do? Naturally, Harry gave me a ride to the interview. After, we went by his house, got some tools, and headed back to the rhino. Not enough tools, as it turns out, so we had to run to my house where I changed out of interview clothes and into jeans again and grabbed more tools. Back to the rhino, fixed the issue (so we thought) and he was off to his place for a family dinner and I was off to the birthday party – a little late.

Just as I pulled up at the party, the brakes locked up again. Briefly: party, party, party, fixed the brakes again. I avoided using the brakes on the way home (try THAT in Phoenix sometime!) but they still locked up by the time I got home. After church today, I’ll be pulling the whole thing apart and starting all over again, double checking the specs before putting everything back together again.

Hope you all have had a wonderful weekend and hope to chat with you all real soon.

Chat ya later…

Oh – what’s that? How did the second interview go?

Pretty well – I was offered the position. I start Tuesday morning as the new store manager for Kidstop Toys. Greybeard, you can stop worrying about me in a cab! WOO HOOO!!!

Birthday Red Friday

Happy Birthday to a few friends: Doug, my cousin Jackie, and John.

I’ll be out cabbin’ it today, and this evening I’ll be trying to finish getting the power booster out of the road rhino so I can put the new one in. Yes, it’s paid off, but dang if you don’t keep having to put money into it.

UPDATE: Just went in to wake TMBWitW up to take me to the cage (with the road rhino down, she would have to drive me there). She said “I had a dream that you said you weren’t going to drive a cab today” I said “I had a dream that I blew through my alarm and you said not to go in today.”

I’m going back to sleep for a little bit, and then resuming work on the road rhino.

One of THOSE Days

April 14th, 2010 . by Cary

So – cabbed it today. Had to come home and change shirts, though. Seems that when a certain passenger went to the doctor, they didn’t fully cure him of his full-throated productive cough. Leaning forward to check both ways before pulling out of the doctor’s parking lot, the passenger had a particulary productive fit of coughing.

I didn’t lean back the entire way to his destination, and then to my house.

I threw the shirt away.

Red Friday Pre-Post

A pre-post? A post before the post? Post aster the preparation?

Don’t worry, it’s a curse of the occasional stream-of-consciousness that I use in writing my posts. Sometimes.

And, of course, it means that I wrote it Thursday evening, even before I wrote my Thursday entry. Wanted to get the stream-of-consciousness thing out of the way, you know?

Any way, as you read this, I am cabbin’ it enjoying a rare day off with TMBWitW and MEG while wearing my Lighting Sharp polo. Hope you all have a great weekend.

Thursday Update

April 8th, 2010 . by Cary

Deli on Monday, Cab on Tuesday and Wednesday. Today, I helped my adopted mom get my adopted dad home from the hospital after his coughing-up-blood incident Tuesday morning. Big mess, their son did the big clean up job, and Serv-Pro came in and did a bang up job of taking care of everything else.

Rob over at American and Proud has compiled a big ol’ list of TEA groups across the US. You might want to make some notes, in case something, you know, happens. Big ol’ tip of the Stetson to Texas Fred for pointing this out to me in the first place.

No, I’m not paranoid. They really are after us. Have you NOT been paying attention?

So – it seems the crazies have figured out that I’m not driving night shift anymore. Since my shift now ends about the time they are managing to drag themselves out of bed for another night of fun and games in Phoenix After Dark (remember Jenny?) I have been, for the most part, avoiding them. Until lately, that is. Seems that not all guys named “Michael” with deeper voices than James Earl Jones and built like a linebacker are all that masculine – “Michael” and his friend, “Roger” were dolled up and ready to go to a certain mid-town gaybar – as that night’s dragged out queens of entertainment. Eww. Yesterday, it was two very shrill – uhm – ladies that hired me at the end of my shift to pick them up from the “Gay” Denny’s (those of you who live in Phoenix will know exactly where I’m talking about) and take them, first, to a cell phone store so the smaller of the two (sorry, that just kind of slipped out. the not-smaller-of-the-two makes most football players look like they don’t know how to bulk up for the season) could pay her phone bill. She was very vocal about the fact that her bill was well over sixty dollars for the month. Vocal meaning sailors on the street were listening in for tips the next time they needed to be “vocal.” Second stop was at a Dairy Queen, for their dinner. Last stop was the apartment. Little Girl asked Not So Little Girl to pony up her share of the cab fare. Seems LG paid for dinner, and NSLG promised to help with the cab. Amazingly, NSLG couldn’t seem to find her money in her cavernous bag. This time, Marine Corps Drill Instructors were seen taking notes. All that, and she only paid the meter – no tip. It’s OK though. There are plenty of others that more than make up for the lack of decency of the few.

Earlier in the day, I had picked up a nice lady. I usually have KLOVE on the radio, and when there is no one in the car I sing along, since most of the songs they play we sing in home group or during our praise gatherings. This time, while the nice lady was int he car, the song “How Great Is Our God” by Chris Tomlin came on. When the chorus started, I started singing along:

How great is our God, sing with me,
How great is our God and all will see
How great, how great, is our God

Nice lady did, in fact, start singing with me. People like that really make my day.
